Michaelmas

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of battle;
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
And do thou, O prince of the heavenly host,
Cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits
Who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

A Prayer by Lancelot Andrewes

. . . since it's his feast today:

Almighty, everlasting God, let our prayer be set forth in thy sight as incense, the lifting up of our hands as the evening sacrifice. Give us grace to behold thee, present in thy Word and Sacraments, and to recognize thee in the lives of those around us. Stir up in us the flame of that love which burned in the heart of thy Son as he bore his passion, and let it burn in us to eternal life and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Feast of the Holy Cross

Pray for the Society of the Holy Cross . . .

"Faithful cross above all other,
one and only noble tree;
none in foliage, none in blossom,
none in fruit thy peer may be;
Sweetest wood and sweetest iron!
Sweetest weight is hung on thee."

Collect for Proper 12 (The week of the Sunday closest to July 27)

O God, the protector of all that trust in thee, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: Increase and multiply upon us thy mercy, that, thou being our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Collect for Proper 11 (week of the Sunday closest to July 20)

Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion, we beseech thee, upon our infirmities, and those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, mercifully give us for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
